A gastronomically beautiful and informative book. It covers the history of food and wine at Waitangi and, as such, it includes many iconic firsts in terms of New Zealand cuisine and wine-making. The account covers food history from earliest times and notes the presence of taro plants at Waitangi from long ago. James Busby, the British resident, was an enthusiastic horticulturalist and a talented and published viticulturalist. He brewed some fine wine at Waitangi; Captain Dumont D'Urville of the French vessel Astrolabe visited Busby's house in 1840 and described the wine he was served there as "a light white wine, very sparkling and delicious to tast". The book is illustrated throughout with sumptuous photography. It also contains recipes using ingredients, discussed in the book, in a modern guise. The recipes have their own mouth-watering illustrations.--Publisher
